The 5 Key Steps in the Invisalign Teen Treatment Process

Since Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments, you probably already know quite a bit about it, starting with the fact that the aligners are clear. That said, it’s normal to want to learn more, like what to expect every step of the way. Below, you’ll find a brief overview of the teeth-straightening process – from your teen’s first consultation to their final appointment.

Step 1: Scheduling Your Consultation

Although the Invisalign treatment process is highly personalized, the first step is always the same: a consultation. At this appointment, your child’s orthodontist will learn all about their dental history, the severity of the case, and their commitment to best practices, like brushing and flossing consistently. If they determine that your teen is a good candidate, then it’s time for the next step: solidifying the details of the teeth-straightening process.

Step 2: Creating Your Teen’s Custom Treatment Plan

There’s a common misconception that the teeth-straightening process looks the same for everyone. That’s not the case! For example, if your child’s case of malocclusion is more moderate, then we may need to add rubber bands, buttons, and other orthodontic accessories to their treatment plan. Don’t worry – we will review details like these with both you and your teen at the initial consultation.

Step 3: Beginning Life with Clear Aligners

Once your orthodontist receives your teen’s aligners, they’ll schedule their first official appointment. In addition to showing them how to take off the trays and put them back on, the treatment guidelines will be reviewed again – from the importance of wearing the aligners for 20+ hours a day to brushing their teeth after each meal. If you or your child have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask! That way, the transition into life with clear aligners is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Step 4: Coming in for Progress Appointments

Throughout the teeth-straightening process, your child will need to come in for check-in visits. These are crucial because they allow the orthodontist to periodically scan their teeth. If they are tracking as anticipated, then the appointment will likely be 20 minutes or less. If they aren’t tracking as anticipated, then changes will need to be made to the treatment plan to avoid significant delays.

Step 5: Making Your Teen’s Custom Retainers

After your teen’s teeth are straight and their bite is aligned, their orthodontist’s focus will shift to maintaining the results. This is accomplished with a custom retainer, which should be worn each night. The good news is that the ones made today often look exactly like the aligners. So, no unwanted attention will be drawn to your child’s smile.
